Event Location
Beautiful Albir…
Albir’s beach is called “Playa de Racó de l’Albir” and has received the coveted European Union Blue Ribbon award, annually since 2001 – not a bad recommendation!
From the beach there are spectacular views across to the imposing Calpe rock, the impressive ‘Peñon de Ifach’, and the mountain ‘Sierra Bernia’ which Mark just loves trekking on.
Space to breathe
Unlike many other coastal resorts in Spain the architects, when developing the town, wanted an open feel to the place. Consequently, they made some very good decisions. They created wide streets, lined with trees, providing a spacious atmosphere. In the quiet and calm atmosphere of Albir, you will still find plenty to excite your senses. Occasionally on summer evenings the aroma of traditional British fodder is carried on the warm breeze from the local Indian restaurants, lol!
The service providers of Albir are geared towards catering to the northern European public which means there’s little you won’t find in the town. You’ll discover an abundance of restaurants, bars and cafés. Get yourself a front row seat at one the many places on the boulevard or seafront with excellent food and drink at very affordable prices and watch the world go by.
The town is not huge either so you are never more than 10 minutes walk from the beach. (the above time estimation does not allow for drunken two step forward, one step back, type walking which of course… always adds a few minutes more… but of course this won’t apply to the Viva attendees!)
Groceries and Shopping
There are plenty of shops and supermarkets in the town catering to all needs including at least 2 health food shops for those with special dietary requirements. We also have the big supermarkets on hand such as Lidl which is next door to the venue.
Leisure
Right in the centre of Albir lies Albir golf. This is a wonderful, multifunctional piece of… well, grassland actually. It covers approximately 2 hectares and is lined with beautiful trees and shrubs. It is owned and cared for by the local council which means that the grounds are freely accessible to the public and use of the grounds are free of charge.
On Albir golf, people play cricket, football and of course golf. There’s room to practice both your drive, on the 130 meter range, as well as your put. The on-lookers are certainly not forgotten as they can sit and watch what’s going on from fixed wooden benches or plastic seats which can be picked up at the wooden building at the entrance of the premises. Refreshment and snacks are also available.
There are also several great golf courses dotted along the Costa Blanca for the enthusiasts!
Nature and walking
Apart from all the “man-made” facilities in Albir, the town also has a wonderful nature park, the “Sierra Helada”, or frozen mountain. The name is derived from the way the cliffs look from the sea on a moonlit night. Fishermen found it looked like an iceberg, hence the name.
A favourite route to walk in the park is the ‘Faro’ trail which leads to a light house. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of a dolphin or two as you look down to the sea from the lighthouse. The summit of the Sierra Helada is 438 meters above sea level and once you’re there the view is breathtaking. Looking to the north you can see as far as the Cap d’Or of Moraira and to the south the sin city of Benidorm shines in all its splendour.
Optional excursions can be booked before during and after VIVA: enjoy the wonderful 24 mile Downhill Bike Ride or explore local beauty spots including the Algar waterfalls and Guadalest.
